February March 2010

Do you need a kick start?

I wonder how you are all feeling after all the snow and cold weather - I think many people have hibernated for a whole month. I certainly found it quite scary each time I ventured out both on foot and in the car. One day I slid down Wendover Drive in the car when I visited Keverne Close. So it’s good to get all cosy with the TV, a good book or music with a nice hot drink and just shut out the world on these dark nights.

However this week the snowdrops have just appeared at the vicarage - it spurred me on to have a look round the garden. Unfortunately, I never got time to tidy up the garden at the beginning of the winter so it is a sorry sight - dead plants, old tomatoes, bolted broccoli, piles of leaves and tired hanging baskets. As yet I have not had the urge to do anything, I certainly need something to get me ‘kick-started’.

I think it’s easy to get like that with the whole of our lives - it’s reminded me that I have drawers to tidy and curtains to wash - and also those Christmas pounds of weight to get off. Thing is - it all takes effort and I don’t always feel like it - we all need an incentive and it’s often the coming of Spring that can provide the spur.

It’s also an opportunity to have a look out how we ‘tick’ what are we like as people, what do we believe? Lent is a good time to stop and take stock to sort out our lives - just like we do the garden - pulling out weeds, getting rid of the dead plants and of course setting new seeds to produce flowers, fruit and vegetables for the coming year.

In our lives there are also bits that need attention: bad habits and attitudes that have developed and a sluggish faith that needs new vigour. That’s why each year we organise our Lent Courses to help us all get that ‘kick-start’ in our spiritual lives and reflect how our faith can give us new vision and energy for the whole of our lives. Why not come and join us. (see Calendar)

Come and journey with Jesus towards the Cross and reflect on what that means to us today.

Joan
